Off Court
As a sports writer for the past 15 years, I’ve spent many nights covering games and writing stories that are assigned to me, instead of writing about
the stories and subjects that capture my attention.
When I’m not writing stories for my day job, I get to choose the things I want to write about and those things are inevitably the stories in my book
“Off Court.”
Over the length of the last seven years, I researched, gathered, and wrote stories of players in the NBA that moved me.
These are stories that I wanted to write, ones that inspired me, and ones that after I had put on paper, I walked away feeling like I was a better person. They just happen to be about some of the biggest stars of the game.
The stories in the book represent what I considered some of the most remarkable in the NBA and in all of sports. I researched and wrote several other stories, but in the end I didn’t feel like those stories fit the direction of the book.
Gathering and writing the stories was just the beginning. When the project was finished, there was still a major challenge — finding the right publisher.
I began to doubt if this book would ever happen. One agent and one publisher later, I opted to publish the book myself. Despite the discouragement and setbacks I faced over a span that lasted nearly two years, I continued to add to the book and refine it.
I didn’t know how it would all turn out, all I knew was I believed in it.
Several publishers said they liked “Off Court,” but most passed. One publisher rejected the book because he said, “Good doesn’t sell.”
I don’t believe it. I never will.
Off Court shares a common thread with the two other books I’ve published (Danny’s Corner and Under the Green Banners), they are all stories I felt like I needed to tell.
I believe there is a place for stories that motivate, inspire and challenge us all to hike to a higher plateau. My simple hope for success is that my writings might in some way help some people get there, and at the same time perhaps I can drag myself along too.
